Chapter 8

The sea was rough – violent even. The small skiff rocked back and forth, nearly throwing her overboard. The wind was deafening as she clung to the worn wooden sides, doing her best to avoid splinters. The twenty-five horse power Mercury engine did little to move her very quickly through the water as the channel and the wind fought a vicious fight. Her waterproof jacket was soaked – the torrents of rain were too much for the coat. Squinting to see, she pressed onward. She knew she didn’t have to go very far – just far enough so that the tide wouldn’t bring it back to shore. As she passed through the breakers, the water smoothed some and she was able to get her bearing’s, using the lighthouse at Devils Peak to guide her. From there she could see Whitecroft and Widow Lane, the place of death. Devils Peak seemed like a fitting venture on this night. Though she held sorrow in her heart – the love that was within prevailed. Carly Holloway had to die – but it didn’t mean she didn’t love her, it just meant that she loved him more.

Sitting in Ian’s office at the Station House, Emily was preparing the search warrants for 306 Dewey Lane – the address of the old farmer, Winston Ails. Liam was reviewing reports of the night of Carly’s death, making his notes as he always had.

“Did we ever find Carly’s backpack? I didn’t see it in any of the photographs.” he asked, nibbling the end of his pen.

“No, that was something that truly boggled us. We searched everywhere.”

Liam moved to the computer and brought up the surveillance video from the night that Carly walked through the field to Widow Lane.

“She’s wearing it while on her way to meet Ethan. Add that to the search warrant.”

“Already did.”

The boat came to a stop one nautical mile from Devils Peak. As it bobbed in the water, she struggled to keep her footing as she moved to the front of the boat. There, she grabbed a pink backpack from under the bow of the boat and unzipped it, being careful not to spill the contents. Inside of the drenched backpack were Carly’s school papers, her student identification card, pictures of Agatha and Carly together, pictures of Carly, Ethan, and Agatha together with Winston Ails farm house in the background, and most importantly, a pair of latex gloves that had been worn and had spots of blood on them. Suddenly a wave struck the side of the boat, knocking her to the floor and spilling the contents of the backpack. Gathering herself, she hastily stuffed everything back inside of the backpack. She zippered it up fully and tied an anchor to the straps. In one motion she tossed it overboard, watching to ensure that it fell to the bottom of the sea. But, on the floor of the boat, slightly tucked under the storage compartment, was a small class four memory card that had fallen from the bag without notice.
